Leona Marie Smolinski was born in Chicago on December 8, 1924. She graduted fromt he Cook County School of Nursing in 1946 and received a B.S. in Nursing Education from Loyola University in 1952. She continued her education receiving her M.A. at the University of Chicago in 1957 and her D.N. Sc. at the Catholic University of America.
